Plants That Grow Really Well in Darker Bedrooms

October 04, 2017

Only very few plants thrive in bedrooms. This is mainly because bedrooms are more often darker than other rooms. Those plants with bright-coloured flowers and those that produce fruits need a lot of sunlight.

Plants That Grow Really Well in Darker Bedrooms

Here are a few hardy houseplants that will thrive in darker bedrooms and are low-maintenance as well.

  1. Dracaena

You will find many varieties of dracaena, and each will have an entirely different size, colour, and shape. Even though they look different they all have one common quality -- they will thrive in darker places. And compared to conventional houseplants they need less water and attention.

In a spot with low or medium light place your dracaena. Keep them away from direct sunlight. You need to water them only once every 10 days.

  1. Sansevieria (Snake Plant)

The Snake Plant or Mother in Law’s Tongue is yet another low maintenance plant. They are the best air filtering plants, too. For lower light areas Sansevieria is one of the best options. They can essentially grow in a closet. For narrow corners or spaces too they are best as they grow more tall than wide. New varieties of this plant are available now.

Place them in a dark spot and water them once every two to three weeks.

  1. Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily)

Peace lily blooms in low light and they look beautiful with white flowers against the backdrop of dark leaves. However, unlike other indoor plants these plants love water. For pretty blooms and full foliage water them once a week. If you don’t water them they will wither but as soon as they get enough water they will pop up in a jiffy.

  1. Aglaonema (Chinese Evergreen)

The aglaonema comes in a range of colours -- from bright white to a striking deep red. All the varieties thrive in low-light spots. They grow slowly and are best for table tops and bookshelves. Larger plants tend to be of medium height but very dense. They are best as floor plants. They need very little water. So water them only when the sand is completely dry.

  1. Neanthe Bella (Parlor Palm)

One of the most versatile houseplants is Neanthe Bella palm. They have an elegant and modern look, and will thrive in low as well as bright light.

Once a week water your palm. Watering the neanthe bella is easy as they can thrive in both moist and dry conditions.

  1. Zamioculcas Zamiifolia (ZZ Plant)

For a dark bedroom the ZZ plant is the top pick. For zero natural light zones this and snake plant are the best options. The ZZ plant looks cool and thrives on neglect. They grow very slowly and will thrive in dark rooms.

ZZ plants need almost no water, and are very sensitive to overwatering. Water them once a month.

  1. Epipremnum Aureum (Pothos)
For low to medium light zones Epipremnum Aureum or "Devil's Vine" is a good option. For a spot that needs a trailing plant they are the best. They grow very quickly and you need to trim them every six months to keep them green and bushy. Water them once a week.
