How to pet proof your carpets
It can be difficult to keep the carpet looking clean all of the time when you have pets at home. Since most cats are indoor animals they are generally cleaner than dogs. But they still spread pet dander and shed, so vacuuming is suggested twice every week.
Don’t buy a carpet with a medium tone if you have pets. To help hide some pet dirt from showing select carpets with a few colors woven into them.
Getting rid of the pet smell out of your carpet is also not easy. Here are a few tips that just might help.
Purchase Stain Resistant Carpet
If possible buy stain-resistant carpet with a protective layer applied to the fibers. Though they are expensive they last long. Scotch guarding practices are not essential as these carpets can withstand being vacuumed, and steam-cleaned. Even spills won’t do much damage.
Scotch Guard carpets
It is best to scotch-guard a few years old carpets. This will put a protective guard, which will resist additional stains and help the fibers maintain their structure. To ensure that every fiber is treated get this done professionally.
Cleaning Pet Urine
One of the toughest things to battle is pet urine on a carpet. You need to clean it immediately to get urine spots out of the carpet. You can clean it using paper towels. Lay them on and let the paper absorb the urine. This will prevent the urine from spreading. Repeat the process until the paper towels are almost dry.
Keep your Pet’s Nails Trimmed
The carpet will get damaged if your pet has long, sharp nails. A pet runs around or scoots across the carpet when it gets excited. This can eventually leave dishevelled, bare looking spots. Use a pet nail file after trimming your pet’s nails. This will make the nails feel smooth again.
Use a Hardwood or Tile Entrance
A tile or hardwood floor entrance is preferred if you have pets, especially if you take your dog for a walk in the rain. This prevents the mud from getting on the carpet or making prints on the floor. Next to the entry door keep a towel handy to wipe their muddy feet. It is very difficult to remove a certain type of mud from the carpet.
Vacuum Twice Per Week
To remove pet odour and dander vacuum your carpet twice per week. Vacuum thoroughly after moving the furniture as pet hair and dander can travel underneath furniture.
Use a Carpet Powder for Homes with Pets
For homes with pets, there are several carpet powders available. Allow it to sit after sprinkling it on generously. After the prescribed time vacuum the carpet thoroughly. The powder and topical particles will be cleared in the first pass. Hair, dander and other particles that are deeper in the fiber will be pulled in the second pass, which should be performed in a slower motion.
Steam Clean at least monthly
Steam cleaning carpets monthly will help to clean any saliva, hair or dander that is embedded into the carpet. In order to preserve the structure of the carpet use a mild cleaner.
There are several ways to maintain a clean carpet when you have pets. Pet maintenance is also important to keep the carpet looking clean and fresh.
