Decorating Tips for Older Homes

Hide imperfections

An easy way to hide imperfection is to paint the trim, ceiling and walls in one color. Door details, beautiful trim and molding built during a different era are what makes you fall in love with an older home. To highlight and preserve these details all you need is a simple coat of paint. Paint the ceiling, trim and walls in one colour but the trim should be painted with a slightly higher gloss to call attention to it subtly. Paint the trim in a neutral contrasting shade if it is in good shape. A near-neutral or neutral contrasting shade will make the trim stand out. For a stately, architectural appeal applying the same color to the ceiling will help. If will also impart uniformity to the entire room.

Celebrate stained glass

If you have beautiful stained glass windows you can bring focus to them by painting the walls white.

Keep vintage trim exposed by in-window shades

A brilliant way to leave vintage window trim uncovered is to use in-window shades. This will give a contemporary and slightly modern touch to the room.

To conceal awkward windows use drapery

Quirky windows in unusual places are common in older homes. To subtly clean up the look of the room a full wall of drapery is the perfect way. An advantage is that this will not block all the light or completely erase the windows.

Use airy shelving units

To add additional storage and display space for books and collectibles airy and open shelving units are a stylish way. They will look modern and at the same time impart a certain gallery-like charm that fits older homes.

Use simple contemporary furnishings

To bring a sense of modern life to a traditional home simple and clean modern or contemporary furnishings are a good tool. Don’t opt for a radically modern look but go for soft colours, clean lines and rich texture.

Mix modern and traditional periods

Some modern pieces will look great in a vintage home. So mix modern and traditional. If some of the accessories are more modern they will make modern essentials like a plush sofa, computer and TV more at home.

Add pieces with weathered outdoor look

Use vintage house numbers, linen, woven baskets etc that feel inspired by the garden.  For a well-worn house these pieces with rustic, soft vibe will fit in perfectly.

Break unusual room layouts into zones

Narrow, long spaces and unusual layouts are quite common in old homes. For better functionality a rectangle can be divided into multiple square zones, to classify zones use area rugs, and to bridge numerous adjacent seating areas use open-sided furniture like benches.
