How to Keep Plants Alive While on Vacation?

February 23, 2017

Planning a vacation? Worried how to keep plants alive while you are away?

If you are taking a vacation for more than a week, you might have to take some special actions to keep your indoor and outdoor greenery alive. Follow these tips to keep plants in good shape in your absence.

Keep them out of the sun

This is applicable to both indoor and outdoor plants. If you have kept indoor plants close to the window the plant is more likely to become dry quickly. Pulling them out of direct sunlight is the first strategy in making sure houseplants stay alive while you’re away. For two to three weeks plants can make do with less than ideal light.

Turn thermostats down

If you are going on a vacation during winter turn down the thermostat to keep the interior of the house cool. Heat from the furnace can also make the plants dry just as the heat from the sunshine. Turning the thermostat down to 55 or 60 degrees will help.

Into the bath

You can keep moisture in the air around the foliage by grouping pots in the bathtub and closing the curtain or shower doors. After placing them in the tub water the plants well, and let the pots drain for up to a day or at least a few hours. Close the drain in the tub just before you leave, and water them.

The plants will rot if you put too much water in the tub. So ensure that there is just enough water to keep them moist. The plants will absorb the water in two or three days if you make sure they are well hydrated first, and then add just an inch of water. Plants usually survive for two to three weeks if left in this manner.

Get help from a neighbour

If you have a friend who is ready to help you when you are away ask his or her help. You can instruct the neighbour on how much water your plants need.

Move pots close together

The plants will provide each other with shade and humidity. Yes, that is a fact. So move containers and pots close together.

Put them inside tents

All you need to build tents are plastic trash bags. Place plastic bags upside down over sensitive plants. To keep plastic off the foliage you can use wooden sticks as tent poles. To allow oxygen to reach the plant cut a few small holes in the plastic.
